Also a little more creepy method of stopping bleeding is to use cobwebs from your house spider's. The webs will help to coagulate the blood on the skin acting as a bandage of sorts.

Ear Infections
Put a few drops of garlic oil or white vinegar into your ear canal and lay down on the opposite side to let those drops do their work. Garlic and vinegar create an environment that won’t support the bacteria causing the infection. Slice a potato and rub its cool, soothing juices all over the burn. Honey, with its antibacterial properties, is also good topical ointment. If you can catch the burn immediately, mustard is also reportedly a great salve.

Headache and Migraine
Try rubbing peppermint or lavender oil on your temples and the base of your neck; sniffing these oils may also help. Apply and wipe off with a sponge or rag.

SOFT SCRUBBER
Simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit.
Note: Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time.

OVEN CLEANER
1 cup or more baking soda
Water
A squirt or two of liquid detergent
Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven, then cover the grime with enough baking soda that the surface is totally white. Sprinkle some more water over the top. Let the mixture set overnight. You can easily wipe up the grease the next morning because the grime will have loosened. When you have cleaned up the worst of the mess, dab a bit of liquid detergent or soap on a sponge, and wash the remaining residue from the oven. If this recipe doesn’t work for you it is probably because you didn’t use enough baking soda and/or water.

WINDOW CLEANER
1/4-1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
Spray bottle
Put all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it up a bit, and use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe is important. It cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you might have used in the past.

VINEGAR DEODORIZER
Keep a clean spray bottle filled with straight 5 percent vinegar in your kitchen near your cutting board and in your bathroom and use them for cleaning. I often spray the vinegar on our cutting board before going to bed at night, and don’t even rinse but let it set overnight. The smell of vinegar dissipates within a few hours. Straight vinegar is also great for cleaning the toilet rim. Just spray it on and wipe off.

FURNITURE POLISH
1/2 teaspoon oil, such as olive (or jojoba, a liquid wax)
1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice
Mix the ingredients in a glass jar. Dab a soft rag into the solution and wipe onto wood surfaces. Sometimes in the holiday frenzy we forget though that others out there, not just our friends, families and neighbors, need a little something to make their lives better, their spirits brighter and their hearts whole. This year I propose a few ways to help do just that.

* Give to the American Humane Society. A small donation really goes a long way to help support neglected and abused pets that suffer from life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

* Adopt-a-species Through the World Wildlife Foundation. For as little as like 25.00 you can get an adoption kit for one of over a hundred differant animals. Of course, the more you donate the better your benefits get. Starting at fifty you'll get a plush replica of your adopted animal. All the proceeds go to helping the Foundation protect the wildlife and their natural habitats.

* Toys For Tots Foundation. The US Marine Corps Reserve each year run several donation drop off points and collection sites as well as benefits for children in need. They ask for unwrapped gifts to be given to needy children in your own community. The program usually starts in October and lasts until Christmas. The Goal is to deliver a new toy to the less fortunate kids, in hopes that in the years to come, that child will remember the good will of others and in turn offer the same kindness to others.

*Salvation Army. The Salvation Army actually has two ways one can donate. One is the Angel Trees and the other is known simply as the Red Kettles. Angel Trees are trees that go up in various department stores, such as Macy's or J.C. Penny and contain the name and age and "wish" of a child. You pick an angel from the tree to fulfill their wish and then drop it off at the collection sites. The Red Kettles are small little Red Buckets that are set up around the city in various locations, usually in front of stores, and one of the Salvation Army volunteers will ring a bell near the Kettle. The object is simple, donate what you can in cold hard cash right then and there. All the proceeds from this go to provide Christmas dinners, clothing, toys for families in need and also to provide people with basic necessities and seasonal aid. They also help people in hospitals, or nursing homes as well.

Of course, there are literally hundreds of thousands of other charities one could donate to and you know, it doesn't even have to be a monetary donation. You could always donate your time too, like to the Red Cross or to the local YMCAs. In the spirit of Christmas, I hope that I've given you all a new way to show your spirit and give to your communities.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262041763416143412.post-8443172572866457562009-11-08T10:26:00.000-08:002010-03-03T10:47:20.768-08:00Healthier Alternatives Article 17Baa Baa Plant Sheep

Legend has it that there is a mystical plant called the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. It was believed this plant was in fact half plant, half animal and would produce a sheep, or lamb as it's fruit. It's full name is "Planta Tartarica Barometz". Barometz is the Tartar word for lamb. The "fruit" of the Vegetable Lamb was cotton, but people back in the Middle Ages knew very little about cotton and assumed the fabric was wool, which then led them to assume that the puffs of cotton were actually tiny sheep attached to the plant by their navels. It was said that the plant would bend down to let the sheep graze on the surrounding grass beneath it and when it was all eaten up, the sheep dropped off from the plant and ran off. Of course, this is nothing but a myth.

But the plant itself, the vegetable lamb, is real. No, it doesn't produce sheep. However, researchers are now saying that it could produce a break-through treatment for the bone-thinning disease of Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis affects many women (and men) each year. It's a chronic disease and very debilitating. Causing fractures to occur with little to no true injury. Causes more people to fall down and it may significantly affect life expectancy and the quality of life obviously is affected.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262041763416143412.post-15490747230769515382009-11-01T10:09:00.000-08:002010-03-03T10:21:37.271-08:00Healthier Alternatives Article 16Rockets to Fight Ulcers?

Yes! You heard correctly! Rockets, otherwise known as Eruca Sativa or Arugula is an edible leafy plant that is rich in vitamin C and potassium and is mostly grown in Mediterranean areas. Some also believe that this plant is one of the world's natural aphrodisiacs.

While it certainly does have the potential to offer up several uses for it's appetizing green leaves, which some scientists believe it even fights cancers, it has been used to treat stomach ulcers naturally, without the harsher medicines which could lead to even more stomach problems in the end. It helps to prevent ulcer activity by limiting the stomach acid which affects the lining. In Ischia, it's used as a digestive alcohol which is used, following meals in small doses to help digest the consumed foods. So the next time those ulcers are giving you problems, try some pizza with Arugula or a salad made with it's green leaves instead of the spicy foods.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262041763416143412.post-10411110725857190192009-10-25T00:21:00.000-07:002010-01-13T00:29:43.743-08:00Healthier Alternatives Article 15Reconnect to the Spirit of Autumn

Cool air, changing leaves, apples, cider, pumpkins, and ghosts and goblins! Resting allows your body to heal itself, replenish antibodies and to let them work out the details of the war inside on their own. (Which is nature's way of course!)

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Staying hydrated also helps to combat a cold or virus. Especially if you have been sweating or vomiting. Keeping you hydrated also flushes out contaminants quicker and could help to alleviate congestion.

Eat More Garlic

Yes that's right! Eating garlic can help to ward off flu and bacteria. (Your friends too and lets not forget about the vampires!) This small little bulb helps lower high blood pressure, prevents hardening of the arteries and lessens cholesterol buildup in the heart. We also know it is antibacterial and antifungal. To expand, you can always have different scents for different areas of your house. For example: Nag Champa for the living room, Dragon's Blood for your bedroom and Spearmint for the bathroom.

2. Saving Orange Peels

You can then grate them and place them in a pot of boiling water in the kitchen to create a nice orange water, which can then be placed into a spritzer bottle and sprayed around the house and on clothing and pet areas to freshen things up.

3. Grow your own Herbs inside

What better way to give your home a fresh smelling scent than to grow your own rosemary inside! Several herbal plants will perform and grow inside a warm home, with little sunlight required.

4. Fabric Softener Sheets in your shoes and closets

It may sound funny, but try placing some dryer sheets into your old smelly sneakers for a while, or in your bathroom closets. The smell of the fabric softener will then cling to anything inside.

5. Use Soy Candles

Soy candles last longer than regular candles and they have a more fuller smell to them. It's called Egyptian Body Sugaring. This basically is a softball candy made with sugar that while warm is smooth and sticky, spreadable. You spread it along your legs and lay down strips atop it, letting it cool. Once cooled you quickly remove the strips. This pulls the hair from the root and when it grows back it will be less prickly and also takes longer to grow. Most every single American likes some form of chocolate. Most everyone grew up being told that it was bad for you too, but recent case studies show that this may not exactly be the entire truth. We all know that chocolate has a few psychological effects on a person. It's calming, soothing, comforting. Dark Chocolate is also filled with Antioxidants your body needs and can help to keep your heart healthy. Studies have shown that a good measured portion of Dark Chocolate can be just as healthy for you as a glass of red wine. Dark Chocolate can also help to protect your brain and nervous system due to the resveratrol antioxidant found in it. This keeps your heart healthy, your blood pressure lower and it can inhibit the spread of cancer in the body, especially prostrate cancer.

A few studies also lend to a few other benefits of dark chocolate, because there is a high level of potassium and magnesium which is a natural muscle relaxer. The "good" fats found in it can also enhance brain function, suppress appetite, stimulate metabolism, boost immunity and help to prevent cardiovascular disease.

So how much do you need to reap the benefits of this miracle bean? 6.7 grams a day doctors say. That in plain English is about a small square of chocolate per day.

So don't feel too bad if you indulge every now and again or every day for that matter, so long as you remember that moderation is the key here and to stick to the dark chocolate over the milk chocolate and white chocolates.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262041763416143412.post-63595809350738259302009-08-02T07:47:00.000-07:002009-08-05T08:08:26.184-07:00Healthier Alternatives Article 4Reader Question, "What can I use during the summer months that is an alternative to Mosquito spray that contains the poison DEET in it? Our kids play outside all day and into the night, catching fire-flies and the mosquitoes this year have just been excessive! Help!"

That's always one of the popular questions. People are wanting to move away from the DEET in sprays and rub on repellents and the reason for that is that DEET in long term exposure can cause neurons to die in the brain that control movement, learning, memory and concentration. There was even a case of a young girl whom DEET caused six cases of brain damage in her and she unfortunately died, so this is definitely a hot topic these days. Fear not! I have some alternatives to help repel those nasty bugs which could cause several health issues all on their own.

Citronella is the old and time tested repellent. Using a pure essential oil will help to block them. Do not use fragrance oils as those aren't true oils. For your skin, applying topically you'll want to get your essential oil from a natural food store or from your local Apothecary.

Catnip will not only make your cats adore you, it will also repel mosquitoes and is a quick up and comer in this area. It's being tested but some research groups have deemed it ten times more effective than DEET.

Garlic is so healthy and useful in so many ways so why not also apply it as a natural repellent to mosquitoes? Eat a lot of it and they wont come near you. Why is that? Because garlic is secreted through the skin glands. You eat a lot of it, you start to smell like it. Perhaps not the best remedy if your planning on going out on a date the next day, but it will work.

I hope these three alternatives help to ease you away from using sprays and topical that contain the neuro toxin DEET.

Another alternative, and a better smelling one for most women, is to use Skin-So-Soft™ from Avon. Put them in a pot of water and simmer for around 30 minutes. The amount of water you use will in the end have an effect on the strength of the solution and on the disinfectant properties as well. Remember in this case, less is more. They will smell a lot stronger and be more potent with less water. Strain the herbs from the liquid and pour the water into a spray bottle. If you want it to cut grease, add a little dash of natural soap to it, but remember, never use any of this on glass as it will cause it to streak instead of shine.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
