Healthier Alternatives Article 4

Reader Question, "What can I use during the summer months that is an alternative to Mosquito spray that contains the poison DEET in it? Our kids play outside all day and into the night, catching fire-flies and the mosquitoes this year have just been excessive! Help!"

That's always one of the popular questions. People are wanting to move away from the DEET in sprays and rub on repellents and the reason for that is that DEET in long term exposure can cause neurons to die in the brain that control movement, learning, memory and concentration. There was even a case of a young girl whom DEET caused six cases of brain damage in her and she unfortunately died, so this is definitely a hot topic these days. Fear not! I have some alternatives to help repel those nasty bugs which could cause several health issues all on their own.

Citronella is the old and time tested repellent. Using a pure essential oil will help to block them. Do not use fragrance oils as those aren't true oils. For your skin, applying topically you'll want to get your essential oil from a natural food store or from your local Apothecary.

Catnip will not only make your cats adore you, it will also repel mosquitoes and is a quick up and comer in this area. It's being tested but some research groups have deemed it ten times more effective than DEET.

Garlic is so healthy and useful in so many ways so why not also apply it as a natural repellent to mosquitoes? Eat a lot of it and they wont come near you. Why is that? Because garlic is secreted through the skin glands. You eat a lot of it, you start to smell like it. Perhaps not the best remedy if your planning on going out on a date the next day, but it will work.

I hope these three alternatives help to ease you away from using sprays and topical that contain the neuro toxin DEET.

Another alternative, and a better smelling one for most women, is to use Skin-So-Soft from Avon. Call your local representative for more details.
